CGPA to GPA Calculator

Not every US university wants international applicants to convert their CGPA to a 4.0 GPA. Before using any conversion method, check the instructions on the application form.

Some universities prefer students to report the academic result exactly as it appears on their transcript. Stanford Graduate Admissions, for example, instructs applicants whose institution does not use a 4-point scale to enter both their GPA and the original GPA scale and specifically says not to convert it to a 4.0 scale.

For an Indian student whose transcript shows:

CGPA: 8.42 / 10

the correct application entry may therefore simply be:

A converted 4.0 GPA is most useful when an application specifically asks for a 4-point equivalent, when you are comparing your result informally with US grading scales, or when a credential evaluator produces the conversion as part of its evaluation.

The receiving university's instructions always take priority over a general conversion calculator.

What Does an Indian CGPA to US GPA Conversion Actually Represent?

A converted GPA should be understood as an estimated equivalent on another grading scale, not as a replacement for the CGPA officially awarded by your Indian university.

For example, a direct proportional conversion gives:

8.5 ÷ 10 × 4 = 3.40 GPA

The mathematics is correct as a scale conversion. However, it does not prove that a US university or credential evaluator will officially assess an 8.5/10 Indian CGPA as exactly 3.40/4.00.

Indian universities do not all use the same grading system. Two institutions can both report CGPA on a 10-point scale while using different:

• marks-to-grade boundaries;

• minimum passing grades;

• course credit structures;

• grade-point distributions;

• rules for failed or repeated courses;

• methods of calculating cumulative performance.

This means that 8.5/10 is an official academic result within the student's original university system, while 3.40/4.00 from a proportional calculator is a convenient cross-scale estimate.

For admissions, the original transcript remains the authoritative academic record.

Simple GPA Conversion and Credential Evaluation Are Not the Same Thing

A quick CGPA-to-GPA calculator and a professional credential evaluation perform different tasks.

World Education Services, or WES, illustrates this difference. Its iGPA system does not simply ask for one final CGPA and apply a universal multiplier. The WES methodology uses the country of education and applicable grading scale, and its course-based process takes individual courses, home credits and home grades into account when calculating a GPA on the 4.0 scale.

A WES Course-by-Course evaluation can also report a US semester-credit and grade equivalent for each post-secondary course and calculate a US GPA on a 4.0 scale.

Therefore, a result from this calculator should not be described as a guaranteed WES GPA unless it actually comes from WES.

How to Use a CGPA to GPA Calculator for a US Application

Use the application requirements to decide whether conversion is necessary:

1. Check your transcript first. Note the exact CGPA and maximum scale, such as 8.42/10.

2. Read the US university's GPA instructions. Some institutions want the original CGPA rather than a self-converted 4.0 value.

3. If the application asks for the original scale, report it unchanged. Do not replace 8.42/10 with 3.37/4.00.

4. If the university supplies its own conversion instructions, use those instructions.

5. If a 4.0 equivalent is requested without another prescribed method, a calculator can provide a useful estimate.

6. If WES or another credential evaluation is required, use the GPA shown in the completed evaluation rather than trying to predict it with a simple multiplier.

Example: When You Should Not Convert

Your Indian transcript shows:

CGPA: 9.10 / 10

The US application asks:

GPA: ____    GPA Scale: ____

and instructs international applicants to enter the GPA as reported by their institution.

Enter:

GPA: 9.10
GPA Scale: 10

Do not enter 3.64/4.00 simply because a proportional conversion produces that value.

Example: When a Conversion Can Be Useful

Your transcript shows 8.50/10 and you want a quick comparison with a 4-point scale before shortlisting programmes.

Using direct proportional conversion:

(8.50 ÷ 10) × 4 = 3.40

You can use approximately 3.40/4.00 as a planning estimate, while continuing to report the official 8.50/10 wherever an application asks for your actual university CGPA.

This distinction keeps the calculator useful without treating a mathematical scale conversion as an official admissions or credential-evaluation decision.
